News & events in the Haynie’s Corner Arts District (HCAD)
Crier – a person who shouts out public announcements.
The purpose of this little broadside is to bring you news you can use about happenings in the Arts District. The publication schedule is occasional and the tone informal. For more in-depth information, we invite you to visit www.hayniescornerartsdistrict.org. To subscribe (no charge), e-mail subscription@hayniescornerartsdistrict.org.
HCAD general meeting of April 3 - The severe thunderstorm that blew through town at the time our meeting was scheduled prevented most people from attending. An ad-hoc meeting was held anyway, and chair Lana Abel gave brief updates on the new subcommittees’ work so far. The next general meeting will be held at 5:15 pm on Tuesday, May 22. The location will be announced later.
HCAD in the news - The Arts District has been in the news frequently of late. Visit the website to read the archive of articles.
Trash talk - That’s what the Mayor and 4th Ward Councilmember were doing at a press conference held in front of the Alhambra Theater on March 26. They announced a new program that will encourage residents and property owners to clean up and place trash out on Heavy Trash Pick Up Day, which begins citywide on April 16. If you get a red warning notice, you’ll know you are in violation. If trash is not cleared within two days after Heavy Trash Pick Up in your area, you can wind up in court. For more information about the program, call Doug Ohning at 436-6064. Allied Waste can answer questions about trash pick up – 424-3345.
Penny Lane Art Market begins - Last December Penny Lane Coffeehouse held a successful outdoor art market. The art market resumed Saturday, April 7 and will be held every Saturday after that from 12 – 6 pm. The market is located on the sidewalks along Second & Mulberry Streets. Artists are not charged for their space, so if you’re interested in displaying your work, contact Heidi Krause, the proprietor – she’ll give you details. Contact her at pennylaneart@gmail.com. As Heidi always says, Buy Local Art! Don’t forget about the art exhibits, great local music, other special events at Penny Lane every week.
Step It Up 2007 March & Rally – A National Day of Climate Action is being held this month and Evansville is participating. The rally will be held Saturday, April 14 at 4 pm at the Four Freedoms Monument on the riverfront. Get more information by visiting www.stepitup2007.org or the local affiliate, www.valleywatch.net.
Second Annual Earth Day Garden Party - The Urban Sisterhood, whose motto is “Start a revolution – plant a garden!” will host an all day event celebrating Mother Earth from 11 am – 11 pm at Haynie’s Corner on Saturday, April 21. Last year’s event was a blast, so come on down that day. Contact urbansisters@gmail.com for more info.
New shows at artWorks Gallery (116 Washington, next to Patchwork Central, 424-2735) and the Art Colony Gallery (56 Adams, next to the Alhambra Theater, 428-7911). Check out the River City Food Co-op (also at 116 Washington, 401-7301) for another unique shopping experience.

The Haynie's Corner Crier - May 2, 2007 News & events in the Haynie's Corner Arts District (HCAD)

Spend the First Saturday of May at Haynie's Corner - May 5th is the day to visit the Arts District. Throw in a trip to the Museum, and you have a full day and evening!
From 12-6 pm Penny Lane Art Market & Gallery gets in swing at Second & Mulberry Streets, 421-8741. There's art inside, too, from 9 am to 11 pm, and it's all local! Smoky & the Undertones perform their first set at 8 pm. The Art Colony Gallery, 56 Adams, 428-7911 has added a Tea House and is now open from 10 to 10 Wednesday through Saturday. The University of Evansville Senior Art Show is the current featured exhibit. Live music that night by an-as-yet-unnamed band of downtown women. Check out the new digs and ask about Project Focus on May 20.
artWorks Gallery, inside River City Foods at 116 Washington Avenue, invites y'all to
The opening of I Married an Artist! from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. Two couples, four artists, one show. Jenny Smith will show her multi-media Goddesses, and husband Joe Smith mounts a new line of giant Teapots. Leah & John Eads, bookmaker & potter respectively, will team up to demonstrate the art of glass blowing. Billy Hedel, who unveils new miniature paintings of houses, trees, gardens, will join Jon Smith to offer lessons in the art of drawing dragons. In case of bad weather, demonstrations will be given in the ceramic studio. Folks from the community organic grocery store will be on hand with information and to explain all the Co-op's services and products. Lots of different picnic foods and drinks are available.
A Community Picnic will be held from 6:30 - sunset in Haynie's Corner parkway, alongside the Alhambra Theater. Bring your own picnic, lawn chairs, and blankets, meet your neighbors and enjoy the acoustic guitar music of Randy Pease. After the picnic, stop at Penny Lane or the Art Colony Gallery for more live music. And about Randy:
he was born at sunset on the winter solstice in 1953. When he was four years old he embarrassed his parents at a church gathering when he suggested the congregation join together in the singing of "Hound Dog." Randy Pease bought his first acoustic guitar as a freshman in college, and he's been writing songs and singing them ever since. He draws from several musical genres in his songwriting, including bluegrass, rockabilly, gospel, blues, folk, swing, rhythm & blues, Celtic, and pop. His forte is the story song, and his characters include league pitchers, shady evangelists, and old fishermen. He has two highly acclaimed CDs: Call Me Ishmael (1997) and Sometimes the Moon (2002). His earliest musical memory is riding in the front seat of his dad's '55 Ford and hearing the Everly Brothers' "Bird Dog" on the radio. (He has always had a soft spot for dogs.)
Wrap up the weekend by learning more about green-building, energy efficiency, and things you can do in your home to curb global warming. Builder, designer and Haynie's Corner resident Ryan Zaricki will tell us more at the Sage Barn, 3848 N 1st Avenue (421-8902) on Sunday, May 6 at 2 pm. A five-buck donation is suggested. A great follow-up to last month's climate change rally and the Urban Sisterhood's Earth Day Garden Party.

The Haynie’s Corner Crier – June 21, 2007
News & events in the Haynie’s Corner Arts District (HCAD)

“Cinema al fresco” is what Roger McBain dubbed the new 4th Friday Film Classics series that kicks off Friday, June 22 at 8:30 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and popcorn down to the Alhambra Theater for a free screening of the 1958 film noir classic Touch of Evil. The movie stars Charlton Heston, Vivien Leigh, and Orson Welles, who also directed. A 12-foot canvas screen donated by Anchor Industries will grace the parkway side of the venerable theater for the evening. Donations for the restoration of the theater will be accepted. Last October’s screening of Nosferatu drew a crowd of more than 100, so come early to get a good spot. The series continues every month through September.
Patchwork Central artists Billy Hedel, Joe Smith and Jenny Smith will be exhibiting their work at the Marlocon Lofts being developed by the Corner’s own Michael Martin during the annual Downtown Loft Tour this Friday, June 22 from 4 to 7:30 pm. The tour is free but you must register and get a map at 223 Main or across from the Civic Center on MLK Boulevard. The Crier got a sneak preview and the spaces are fantastic. The artists are members of the artWorks Gallery, inside the River City Food Co-op at the White House, 116 Washington Avenue. There is free parking in the Patchwork Central lot next door. The natural foods and community grocer is open every day and is the only one in town with a gallery!. Call 401-7301 for more information.
Working Together, a group show at the Evansville Museum which closes August 5, also includes art by Jenny and Billy, and another Haynie’s Corner artist, Kelly Gilbert. All three have won awards for their work this year. Art with a Historic Perspective at the Chamber of Commerce in the Old Post Office features Billy’s architectural paintings and is on view through July. Both shows are mounted in partnership with the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana.
The Arts District has been busy and in the news a lot lately. There was a great article in Evansville Living about the Washington Avenue Historic District. Only four Preservation Alliance Awards were handed out this year, and all went to property owners in HCAD – Kerry Postlewaite, Clarence Tobin, Michael Martin, and Billy Hedel/Tom Loesch. Hedel and Loesch led a tour of Oak Hill Cemetery during Preservation Week, which included a studio tour of art-making places in the neighborhood and a stimulating luncheon talk by Paducah city planner Tom Barnett.
Check out the flower beds in the parkway – planted and maintained by a small band of Haynie’s Corner volunteers. Thanks to Lowes and Keep Evansville Beautiful for the bedding annuals. The fountain is on, so come on down to the Corner – where art lives!

Billy Hedel, Jenny Smith and Joe Smith, artWorks Gallery and Haynie's Corner artists, will be exhibiting their work - paintings, sculptures, and pottery - at the Marlocon Lofts today. Developers, Arts District residents and brothers Mike and Greg Martin have opened their spectacular, ultra-modern development for today's annual Downtown Loft Tour. That's today, Friday July 6, 4 to 7:30 pm. It's free, but you need to register and get a map, either across from the Victory Theater or at 203 Main Street.
Also, the Downtown Friday Farmer's Market is now open in a new location - across from the Old Post Office (pop in to the Chamber of Commerce offices to see Billy Hedel's house paintings). The Greyhound Station is the backdrop. Be sure to visit the River City Foods booth and see if any of the homemade cinnamon buns are left.
Saturday, another Haynie's Corner artist Kelly Gilbert, along with her students, will be working at and selling their art at Penny Lane Coffeehouse (2nd & Mulberry Streets) during the day.
And while you're in the arts 'hood, visit the white house at 116 Washington Avenue, next to Patchwork Central - that's where you'll find both River City Foods and artWorks Gallery. Open everyday, free parking.

Fire*Works is a new body of work by glass artist Lisa Dayvolt. After working mainly in clay and small-scale fusing for many years, Lisa has developed a technique to create functional art glass vessels and platters in brilliant colors and unique forms. An opening reception will be held Friday, July 20 from 4-5 pm at the artWorks Gallery, in the white house at 116 Washington Avenue. The show runs through Labor Day. Open daily. 401-7301.
While you’re at artWorks, say hello to Christine Bowen, the new manager of River City Foods, which houses the gallery. Current food co-op manager John Eads and wife Leah are going on a mission trip to Paraguay, then Portland. We wish them the best. Lots of new stuff at the neighborhood grocer and many pleasant changes – check them out.
The Mayor’s Traveling Town Hall comes to Haynie’s Corner next Tuesday, July 24. Mr. Weinzapfel and his department heads will be at Patchwork Central from 5:30 to 7:30 pm to listen to your complaints, compliments, problems and suggestions. 100 Washington at 6th Street, free parking.
Meet me at the Alhambra. Say, let’s make that dinner and a movie. The next 4th Friday Film series is July 27, when you can watch Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest on the side of the Alhambra Theater at 8:30 pm. It’s free. (Bring your own lawn chair, though.) Before the show, dig into the BBQ at Patchwork Central from 5:30 to 8:30. You can eat-in or carry-out some great bbq and all the right sides made by the Patchwork Chefs: beef brisket, pulled pork, and bbq chicken. $6 for sandwiches, $12 for a meal served with baked beans, slaw and bread, or $15 per pound. Desserts, beer and wine will be available. All the proceeds support Patchwork’s ongoing programs in the community. And if you’re new to the ‘hood, or just have heard of Patchwork and never visited, this is a great way to sample some of their famous hospitality as well as their good food. By the way, Patchwork Central, located at 100 Washington, will begin celebrating its 30th anniversary year this October. 424-2735.
